Hey! There's a new UpsideDive site!

We've got a new site! Yes-yes y'all! Head on over to UpsideDive and keep up with all our happenings and  adventures!

Saturday, September 1, 2012

Sometimes a small push can send you exactly in the direction you're looking for...

With the building scheduled for demolition, the physical UpsideDive shop located at 269 Queen St. East will close permanently on Sept. 30, 2012. We will be having a 'Farewell 269' sale for the month of September with most items on sale for 20-30% off or more.

For the next lil' while we'll be taking a break from a retail shop, but will still be hunting for vintage goods — and selling online and at the occasional flea. We're focusing more on interior design & consulting projects, and a new website with more information will be online shortly. If you are currently looking for design assistance please email us at upsidedive@gmail.com for more info.

We've experienced and learned so much in the last six years, and we're excited for what is next to come.

Wise words of John Cage.

Was reading the latest issue of Apartmento last night and this John Cage quote from a Nick Currie comment piece resonated with me.

"The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful, is why do I think it's not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason."

Just something to think on.

A guide to follow.

Just found out about this awesome new online guide to independent retailers/shopping called Shopikon. Currently featuring shops in New York and Vienna, but more to follow soon. I really like the look of the site and all the shop pictures they include. The write-ups seem more in-depth, like they actually take the time to speak with the shop owners.

Also we've got the new issue of Designlines in store and there's a really creative photo spread on bed coverings. Be sure to stop in and grab your free copy!

Saturday, August 6, 2011

Shop closed this Sunday, August 7.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but the shop will be closed this Sunday, August 7, 2011. We will reopen Wednesday Aug. 10 for our regular hours.

Thanks!

UpsideDive in the Toronto Star.

We've been a bit busy of late so it slipped our minds to mention the article that the lovely Rita Zekas did about us for the Toronto Star. We're very grateful that Rita happened across our lil' shop and liked it enough to feature. Check it out here - Zekas: The upside of vintage.

Mass Modern Moodboards

Wright Auctions just had their Mass Modern Auction yesterday, with pieces going for some very affordable prices. Ang and I thought it would be fun to each mock up a living/dining room with the pieces available. Using some criteria of what was needed(i.e. one sofa, one armchair, dining table, set of chairs, etc.), we sifted through the whack load of beautiful stuff and put together two moodboards reflecting some of our personal style (and yes we know artwork is not scaled to size but that's why getting creative ie. murals are a good option).  We didn't have much time to crop and clean up white space... this was an exercise in fun.

We separately completed our boards the evening before the auction/results. Funny thing is we picked a few of the same pieces - these minds think alike! We're happy with the end result, hopefully you'll appreciate it too! Here is the tallied $ totals/final results of each room:

my rooms came in at a hefty $26,502 (my room also contains three more pieces than ang's)

LIVING ROOM
Anonymous untitled print (goats on the beach)

Ang's room came in give or take $17,034. (we say give or take, because of two reasons. 1- she selected the la fonda coffee table as the dining table. for an additional $1000 we'll pretend its been upgraded to a dining table version. 2- the bayer print must not have sold as no result was posted. we have used the highest estimate amount for this piece)

SHOP SHOTS!

A few new pieces have come in and they are eye catchers, but we thought we should also give a little extra attention to some of our wallflower items, that blend so well into the background, they might be missed otherwise. Here's a sneak peek of what you'll spy in the shop this week:
