I really like the look of the site and all the shop pictures they include. The write-ups seem more in-depth, like they actually take the time to speak with the shop owners.

Mass Modern Moodboards

Wright Auctions just had their Mass Modern Auction yesterday, with pieces going for some very affordable prices. Ang and I thought it would be fun to each mock up a living/dining room with the pieces available. Using some criteria of what was needed(i.e. one sofa, one armchair, dining table, set of chairs, etc.), we sifted through the whack load of beautiful stuff and put together two moodboards reflecting some of our personal style (and yes we know artwork is not scaled to size but that's why getting creative ie. murals are a good option). We didn't have much time to crop and clean up white space... this was an exercise in fun.

We separately completed our boards the evening before the auction/results. Funny thing is we picked a few of the same pieces - these minds think alike! We're happy with the end result, hopefully you'll appreciate it too! Here is the tallied $ totals/final results of each room:

There are times when walking around the grey, hard, often cold concrete of a large city like Toronto can get you downright cranky. It's only when little patches of Spring colours peek through, that the crustiness of the city starts to soften. It doesn't help that this Spring feels a tad late and a cool one to boot! The buzz seems to be that everyone is having a bout of cabin fever - I know I am. So instead of seeking refuge, I decided to face the weather head-on yesterday and I'm glad I did.

With camera in hand, I gave myself a challenge to seek out the natural design that lures an amateur photographer like myself to it's vibrant hues and touchable textures. I caught a glimpse of some pretty lovely things. It seems Spring certainly shows off nature's extraordinary master design at work and, really, how can we not be inspired by that.

When I see the photo of the black vinyl button-tufted couch that recently left our store for a loving home in the east end of Toronto, I can’t help singing The Rolling Stones song ‘Beast of Burden’. Why? you ask.

Well, it has a cool aloofness on it's own, but once paired up with the right fixtures and furnishings, a bold in-your-face kind of style is revealed. Think ‘rock star’, older well-worn-in rockers of the 60-70’s, hence The Rolling Stones! Plus, I like to swap the lyrics in 'Beast of Burden' from "am I tough enough..." with "am I tufted enough.." I can't help it! Blame the inner geek in me. Tufting can be that hint of toughness that anchors a room, especially when it comes to a central piece like a couch, which often acts as the workhorse. A well made couch takes the beating, carries the weight and still keeps giving the comfort.

Years ago I saw this vintage LIFE magazine article on Annie Leibovitz’s iconic photographs of the Stones 1975 Tour of the Americas. It just feels so right that the furniture these hardened souls lounged on would reflect their personas. Like this image of bassist Bill Wyman getting a shoulder massage backstage on a black tufted leather couch. (Check out those pants - awesome!) Tufting seems to be popping up everywhere, gaining in popularity – from 30 Rock to Mad Men to Modern Family. I guess I'm not alone in my love for tuft.

What’s great is that not only do these pieces add extra texture and character to a room, but much like a rock star, as long as the upholstery is well cared for, these handsome devils develop a greater appeal and patina that just gets better and better with age.

Spotted! Brunswick Fiberglass Children's Chair!

I stumbled across this site today, called Numero 74 - a children's handmade and vintage shop with some oh-so adorable things. But what caught my eye was a white Brunswick kid's chair that is just like ours! Now the site operates out of Paris and so it's especially neat to see a piece of American made vintage, intended for children, make it's way over.

With the conversion(from Euros) theirs comes to...wowza! $262.34CAD(not including shipping.) Ours is a steal at $45CAD and like we mentioned in the item posting, if you don't have wee ones these lil' chairs are great as side/night tables or plant stands. And honestly, just a collection of them against a wall would break hearts to pieces!

Take a peek around Numero 74, their blog is also filled with great shots of their shop and tonnes more inspiration. In fact the one shot of all the mini chairs hanging gives me an idea for a possible window display.

Spotted! This week - Ralph Lauren does a crochet tie!

I was snooping online and happened to stumble upon mrporter.com, a mens fashion blog, and they were featuring Ralph Lauren's Black Label Blue Crochet Tie for $95. Today we happened to dress up our "james" (aka. male dress form) for spring with a smart vintage wool blend tie in a bright red and burgundy weave knit.

We also have a brown wool knit that I find to be just as smashing as Mr. Lauren's blue crochet tie and ours fits well with a tight budget. Both the red and the brown wool ties are going for $15 each - what a dandy deal!

Time to Play Santa – The Upcycle Way!

It’s December and you know what that means. The frenzy of buying, or if you haven’t started — making — gifts, for friends and family begins. At least it does in my home. Unless I knit or quilt a blanket, I don’t start thinking about holiday gift-giving until the chill of Dec. 1 hits me. If you’re like me and you’re looking for a way to dress up your gifts, but don’t want to buy wrapping paper, here are a few great ideas and fabulous suggestions that I stumbled on during my quest for creative, eco friendly alternatives.

Use fabric instead of paper! Try your hand at Furoshiki, an origami-like way of folding fabric. A guide published by The Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan shows you how to use the technique to wrap different types of packages. If you use a lovely vintage napkin or scarf, it’s a great way to give two gifts in one.

“What? No gift bag to put that cute vintage mohair sweater you snagged for your sis?” Well, you're in luck -you can make a cute bag out of newspaper. How About Orange shows you how.

I'm deeply in love with my new (used) leather sheepskin lined Georgettes. Angie calls these gems granny biker boots — I call them my “Gourgeous Georgies.” They're sleek and smooth, with a little bit of a ’60s mod styling. They also have the added bonus of having been made in Canada, which is a rarity these days.

I don’t know about you, but it’s been quite a long time since I’ve been this excited about a pair of boots. I saw them at UpsideDive while there on my weekly work fix (I help out when I can). These boots called out to me: "Psst … hey lady! It's me, the pair you've been looking for." Among the many other excellent pairs of boots, there was something special, and quite cheeky, about this pair.

I awkwardly wear a size 9½ to 10, with one foot slightly bigger than the other. As you might guess, this makes finding a great pair of boots or shoes even more of a challenge. So, to my surprise, when I tried them on they actually fit! Feeling like a modern day Cinderella, I snatched them up right away.

In the past two weeks I’ve been strutting my Gourgeous Georgies around, happily going about my daily routines with a clickety-clack in my step. But with the prospect of snow on the way, I realized I should hurry up and get some waterproofing to protect my lovely boots from the cold weather and the dreaded salt that will inevitably cover every sidewalk after the first big snowfall.

I looked through some of the shoe shops and drug stores in the city and didn’t find much in non-toxic leather protection. Many commercial products have toxic solvents, most of them petroleum-based. I was looking for an all-natural product, but is it even possible to find a non-toxic, all-natural leather waterproofer? Lo and behold, there are some all-natural products out there and online, products such as 'Harness Honey Leather Conditioner', 'Newfoundland Bee Company Leather Waterproofer and Conditioner', and 'Boot Rub' to name just a few. I was surprised to discover that the simplest option is also the cheapest and the most environmentally friendly and even vegans will love it. It’s a product called lanolin, and I've used it before — but not on my boots! Breastfeeding mothers of newborns know what I'm talking about here.

Lanolin, a natural oil found in sheep's wool is another alternative for an all natural repellent. It’s a wax secreted through the skin and contained in the wool that helps keep sheep dry when it rains. Lanolin can be extracted from sheep without harming them; it's removed from the wool during the cleaning process before it becomes a textile like yarn or felt. You can find it in your local pharmacies as “Anhydrous Lanolin.” It can come in a tube, a rich lubricating type of cream that can be easily rubbed into the leather or it can be found in some health stores in a liquid form, usually used for cosmetic purposes. The cost is very affordable and a little goes a long way. However, before applying it, make sure the boot is clean of all dirt. Use a slightly damp rag to wipe them off and let the boot dry completely before using the lanolin. I would also do a test patch on a small (not-too-noticeable) portion of the boot, just in case it darkens the leather. If you’re satisfied with the test results, then go for it and give those boots a good rubbing! Simply rub lanolin onto your boots like you would any other waterproofing treatment, let it dry for 24 hours and voilà — you’re leather is protected!

As for my Gourgeous Goergies, well, they’re getting the spa treatment tonight, a lanolin rubdown that will keep them looking good now and into the new year.

Thanksgiving!

We're closed Thanksgiving Monday (Oct.11th) but open again regular hours on Wednesday. Brand spankin'!

Took some quick shots this morning to show you the newly painted store front. We also got new vinyl signage care of the ever lovely Tina Chou. Now all we need to do is paint out the door. Joe from Eco-Stems next door suggested we go with the orange or yellow from our logo, and I think I'm liking that idea. Whatchu think? Any suggestions on colours?

I've also included the current window displays seeing as we'll probably be changing them again within the week. The decor side has a gorgeous teak dining set of four chairs by Poul Volther for Frem Rojle Denmark and the table in a lovely teak with two pull out leaves. No markings on this piece, most likely Danish but we're still a searching. The set is priced at $695+tax. Not bad for a full dining set, not bad at all.

The attire side is an homage to beach parties, more of the pyscho kind, but definitely kitsch. In the second photo you can see a close up of Dinah and her eat-your-heart-out-but-I-still-love-you-always-Isabella-Blow headpiece. What's that you say? A brass crayfish I tell ya.

Upside on Better Business

We romanticize about ways to change up the retail format. Daydreamers at heart, we rant and ramble on about business ideas that wouldn't feel so...businessy - shops that made a deeper connection with the customer. The first time we took a day course at the workroom in Parkdale, I new right away this was the change, or at least a turn to it. If you've never been to the workroom(first off you should go asap!) you'll be pleasantly surprised at a mixed use of workspace and retail area filled with product for which to create wonderful things. Sewing machines can be rented by the hour, and if you sign up for their newsletter you can keep up on the many classes held there. We took the pillow cushion class and were pleasantly surprised with the ones we made, and we hope to take the box cushion course next. Some courses are seasonal but there's always a good variety, from attire to decor. One of the best things about the workroom is the staff are super nice, and oh-so patient, making the whole experience amazing. I just recently found out about this lovely french spot, called Sweat Shop, that also offers crafting courses and doubles as a cafe, but while you're a-knittin' they teach you french lessons to boot! Not sure when the next time I'll be in Paris is, le sigh, but I'm definitely hitting up this place as soon as I can.

I just think it's such a great business practice to open up a space that helps support your customers just as much as yourself. Now I'm sure few of the customers go on to sell their handmade products but the opportunity is definitely there. Money aside, the customer is learning valuable hands-on information and with a slight push there's the capability to create. They're definitely getting something more than just a tangible object, there's a deeper experience here.

We get crushes on customers. It's true, someone comes in and wows our socks off and we want to be BFF's with them instantly. Often they're quirky, crafty, lively - they pique our interest and inspire us fully.

Donna Kim is one of those lovely muses. A few weeks back she came in and bought 5 rush seat dining chairs, to use in her home and as seating at her studio, Edge Of Your Seat, where she restores woven projects. A master at weaving - cane, reed, cord, you name it - Donna is bitten. Within the first minutes of our conversation, she had already mentioned that she was simultaneously studying my scarf and trying to determine how it was made. And of course we love when we meet people who are passionate about something, and have the opportunity to make a living from it! Donna's prices are very reasonable, it is a labour intensive craft and unfortunately one of many dying art forms, but it's the quality of her work that stands out. When we delivered the chairs, we got the privilege of peeking into her studio and ogling the pieces and definitely got a deeper sense of who she was through her work. The whole time she was very open, bright, informative and sincere(all the best qualities in a BFF of course) and afterward we couldn't help but feel as if we had met her before. And comfort should be the key right? This is the path toward better business practice, building relationships between client and entrepreneur. So if you have an investment piece(s) kickin' about your place, something perhaps a lil' beaten, something woven in need of a lil' TLC, get in touch with Donna. Way back in the late summer, the lovely Jewel Weeks came into our shop and bought a slender teak coffee table and from there a friendship began. A coupla months ago, she came in this time on the hunt for quite a few pieces, but not for herself. She had been propositioned to decorate from scratch, a friend's newly bought loft in the Tip Top building. Jewel took on the task, with a few things in mind. The client hated purple and wanted "retro-chic, with a sense of laid-back warmth." Keep in mind the client is male, which I think can often lead a designer to that heavy masculine styling, dark colours, wood/chrome everything, something that reeks of a bachelor shag pad - ugh.
Jewel did quite the opposite. She kept it light, open and airy. She softened the roughness of the loft with a bright blue palette and mixed in warm earth tones. Keeping it modern with sweeping mid century lines, but anchoring a distinct look with distressed post war and reclaimed industrial pieces. Jewel was the ultimate hunter and bought pieces from many different sources, and UpsideDive happened to be one of them. Below are some lovely shots of the space taken by Aristea Rizakos. Jewel did such a beautiful job putting this space together, and most importantly her client was extremely happy with the results.
We would like to thank Jewel for the opportunity to be a part of a project like this. The brown couch, pink & orange distressed oval mirror, teal school chair, bank of blue lockers, Goines print and the '60s op art wallpaper in the washroom are all items purchased here at UpsideDive. Also one of our favourite things about running this business is to see how our customers use the pieces they buy from us. So we were especially excited to see the photos. Upside of apartments...

In this snow-globe weather we're having, all I can think about is how can I take control of the mess that is my home. I'm a pack rat. Love-hate relationship with clutter. I know i'll never be a minimalist, I'm far to frivolous for that. And of course, hellooo, I run a vintage shop so I'm always, always on the hunt for the good stuff. But it's true collections become clutter so easily and I just can't function under all that junk.

We recently, my man and I, moved into a new apartment back in December. I find the hardest part about moving is trying to fit all the furniture from the last place in the new place without making it look too much like the last place. And there's always the issue of storage space. This new apartment doesn't have as much cupboard space and no built-in shelving like the last one. Ultimately I don't really like the idea of hiding all your stuff away, but there are things that aren't so aesthetically designed and hence don't need to be in plain view. The food processor to be exact. But the biggest problem so far has been the books/movies/music that has little or no where to live. So the hunt for shelving has begun, and where I can't find it, I'm trying to rejig or attempt DIY projects. Ultimately I want pieces that I can take with me, preferably modular so that when the space changes the pieces will still fit. Is that too much to ask for?

So to solve the shelving problem I've been internet/magazine prowling. For the office we picked up a bunch of old apple crates that are currently stacked and do the job for now, holding books and mags, but I'm not super happy with them. Some ideas are a brewing though. I spent the night obsessively reading every post on The Brick House blog, and found this project she did amazing.

I love the sleek, airy look. I don't want to copy it exactly but I think I'll incorporate it into something.

I also decided I really wanted a Tomado Holland shelf or a vintage copycat. So after much ebay watching, I decided to check out some other online shops and I ended up with a beaut from DesignLover. It's not a real Tomado, but I love the quirky simple colours and since this shelf is going in the washroom, I think it will blend well with a mix of colours.

And of course I'm also pretty sure I need to purge. My tastes are often scattered, which I like, but there are things that aren't getting no lovin' sitting around aimlessly and maybe need to find a new home. I always kinda liked the idea of starting fresh when you move into a new place, but alas my pocket book doesn't reflect that mindset. And maybe that's the silly consumerist inside me talking. There are definitely pieces of furniture that I own that I adore, so I'll make do indeed.

I leave you with a photo of the Eames Case Study House. I draw so much inspiration from these two, it's really unbelievable what they could come up with. The ability to really define oneself through their living/work space with such a positive outlook is just so beautiful. Trying my best not to be jealous. That doesn't get me anywhere now does it.

Ang and I were dreaming up these windows for a few weeks now, but 'cause the busy/lazy bug can bite real bad sometimes, we didn't get them in till this Wednesday. But here they are! Not as lavish as we originally wanted, but I think they look swell. A hint of Valentines Day, amidst the choas. The decor side with the title of Love Potion No. 9 tells a vague story of a mad scientist trying his best to decipher the female species and attempting to create his own. The attire side, titled Mad Love, is possibly a Stepford Wife who has gone bonkers over the pressures of being house bound and so she releases the Bride of Frankenstein within. And did you notice the new blue hue on the side walls? Yeah we thought it was about time to switch out from the acid yellow into something much more spring. Come by the shop and take a peek, there's lots of lil' bits to play eye spy with.

Upside of ...Collaborating

Something clicked late last year. Possibly from the ends of my fingertips. A throbbing need to make something with my hands was pulsing from deep within. Unannounced a project came up. My friend Grant Heaps was looking for someone to help with a big, big, big sewing project. I accepted with a jump. I've taken a basic sewing class and my mother has always had a machine, which I stealthily moved to my lodging. And for the last nine-ish years the machine has lived with me. But only on occasion would I play around with her. A small messy project here, some quickly hemmed pants there. And yet I jumped. I told Grant I'd love to help out and so we began. Now to clarify: I only really did maybe 5% of the entire piece, but I really, really enjoyed it. It lit some dead spark. I think a lot of it is because of Grant and his encouragement, but I'm itching for more. The photo included is of Grant's Garden Chairs from the Radiant Dark show put on by Made. They are truly beautiful and need to be seen in person to appreciate the detail and care and passion put into this band of six.

A couple of weeks back I also attended an artist talk by Tobias Wong and Cynthia Hathaway at Harbourfront Centre. The talked of their collaborative work and how strength and clarity come from more than one viewpoint. Cynthia spoke of her works with Platform 21, especially the Repair Manifesto; an amazing project she worked on helping folks mend the broken bits of loved things. Tobias only does collaborative work now, and it's inspiring to see an artist/designer embrace a real sense of community in his or her work. His ideas wouldn't develop into much without the help of many other hands. And how humble is that, an artist that can admit his own flaws, that can move forward and seek out the right people to get the job done, and done perfectly.

And so I can't help get the fever. I want to make things, beautiful things, and I want others to make it with me. I think it would be great to start a creative community that people could help connect and complete creative projects, kinda like a craigslist for skilled people and interested apprentices (maybe this exists already?). So I will be writing some posts on the projects I’m working on. I figure it's also a good thing to talk about on the blog, bringing light to the people I'm so grateful to work with. I don't have it all figured out just yet, but Project 1 will tie in to men's accessories and an interesting way of producing them. Confused? S'okay, so am I.

Wow, it kinda feels like the future, no?

Just a quick shout out to say thanks to everyone who supported us in quite a busy year, what with the jump to a new retail location and all. It makes are hearts swell to see our customers not only move with us but keep coming back in. We're still in that newbie business stage, where we can get easily caught up in all of it, and feel swamped, but we look forward to the steps it takes to grow a business. And no doubt that 2010 will be just as amazing and full of new challenges.

Oh Holiday Joy

Is it really time again for xmas and new year?? geez, blink and the season changes...

Well, we've sprinkled a little festiveness around the shop. A little view from here:

Loose and boxed ornaments start at $4 each. Pretty brass and silver deer at $15/pc. Little lovely metal tins from $5-$18 (ciggy to rum to cake containers) great for packaging homemade cookies, gifts, or as knickknack holders.

For the mid-century lovers on low budgets, we've got some great black rod metal racks: magazine/book/log holders. $40-50 range. J'adore the book-shelf mag rack -these days they're harder to find. And we love the dual log holder with removable brass basket. But of course it can hold mags and books too.

Well as quickly as it goes, we hope you take the time to relax and share moments with the important fs this season -family, friends and food. Drink in a little music whether its John Waters style or Messiah. Joy is a choice, blinking is inevitable.

Well we hope you all had as much fun as we did on this past Halloween weekend. Ang and I went a dancing at the Worn Fashion Journal's Issue 9 Release "Slow Dance of the Living Dead", which was a bona fide blast! We had loads of fun, met bunches of new people and had the best time dressing like the dead. Check out Worn's Flickr page and see if you spot anyone you know, perhaps one of the UD gang? Sooo there's this new online shop directory that UpsideDive just joined called RetroStart focused on vintage furniture design from the '50s-'80s. They have profiles submitted by shops from all over the globe, Canada included! We think this is pretty awesome, and assuming that a handful of the websites have physical shops, it's a must to check out before you head out a-travelin'. It's a gem of an idea put together by two Dutch entrepreneurs, Pieter Akkerman and Margriet van der Wiel. So be sure to pop on over and take a peek at this great design resource!

I know! I know! I was supposed to do a post Saturday on new items and I didn't. It's 'cause it's so darn hot around here that it puts me to sleep, but if you know me well enough it really doesn't take much for that to happen!

Anywho so heat waves and impromptu naps aside, i've got a bunch o' goodies to show you, hopefully enticing you to come and stop by the shop, even just for a chat.

We have a tonne of great clothes going up this week, some last minute summer sale items, and a whack load of new fall pieces will be going up next week. Here's a few shots to tease.

White leather sack purse $35, blue & turquoise & white enameled necklace $20. Plum wool '50s frock $40, weaved cane '70s wedge peep toes $35. Beige and black '60s scooter dress $25, red patent '60s purse $30.

On the decor front we have beautiful new pottery in store, some great figurative knick-knacks too! The Beauceware white/blue/yellow curved bowl/plant pot is $45. The green glaze dish/ashtray is $20. The set of crackled perforated pottery lamps on teak bases are $65 a piece. The Mexican piggy bank is $35, white plastic Contempra rotary phone is $25, Kosta Boda Sunflower glass candle holder is $25 and the atomic teak and olive ceramic lamp is one of a set for $250. Lastly the attributed Murano Sommerso lighter is $45 and the carved wood alligator is $35.

Sooo like I said keep checking back, we triple promise that there will be lots of great things up on the site before the weekend is upon us.

Upside of August!

Woo Hoo! It's August which is like the busiest birthday time of the year, all that winter time lovin'! Which has kept us busy bees running the shop and attending summer parties in our free time. But we've also been out on buys when we can and bringing in new stock quite frequently, almost weekly in fact. Sooo I thought it would be nice to keep our blog readers updated with some new product shots. We try our best to get new stock up online, but it's a ton of work and sometimes things sell so quickly. Excuses aside I'm making a point of keeping this Saturday stock update going so check back every week.

Below are some photo highlights from buys over the past two weeks. The circular walnut coffee table($225) is a beaut! It was made by Interiors International Limited from Montreal. We don't know too much about the manufacturer, so if you have any info send it our way. We also picked up these lovely late '50s rattan basket chairs($175 each) with pop floral tufted cushion covers. These have a great black rod slender frame, and are great for indoor/outdoor use. I have an orange corduroy version myself at home, which my cats love a lil' too much.

We also just got in this awesome set of three Fritz Nagel stackable chromed steel candlesticks($25 a piece), which some people have very large collections of. I've also seen coloured versions and another site Fandango carries some variations by Nagel. Also pictured is a Czech glass vase($40) designed by Frantisek Peceny for Sklo Union. Similar stylings to the work of Finnish designers like Tapio Wirkkala. In the second photo we have a super cute set of Treasure Craft owl salt & pepper shakers($12). They have joined our the Japanese gnome cookie jar($35), lil' English toy dude($15) and stack of '70s Ironstone toast plates($4 a piece/8 available) in that corner of our home accessories bookcase.

As for attire, we recently picked up these adorable cognac leather ladies brogues($30) in mint condition and these oh-so pretty leather coin wallets. The blue and turquoise ones($12 each) have tiny gold fleurs-de-lis imprints and are made in Italy and the larger orange one was buttery smooth, but it just sold yesterday.

NEW SHOP-UPDATE!!!

We've been optimistic attempting to open on schedule, although we missed the weekend, we are almost there hooray! The new shop at 269 Queen St. East will officially open Wednesday June 10th. Hours are:

Mon/Tues closed (appointments possible)
Wed/Thurs -10-6pm
Fri- 10-7pm
Sat- 10-5pm
Sun-12-5pm

We are located on the south side of Queen Street East, between Sherbourne and Parliament.

A few changes to note: Prices will no longer include sales taxes and will be charged additionally. We are awaiting a POS system to accept credit cards and debit but until then, cash is main method of payment.

Upside of...Painting.

So if you haven't heard yet, we're moving! The new shop will be open at 269 Queen St. East as of Saturday, June 6. Of course there's a lot of prep work that goes into a new location and painting is one of them. Yup. We spent the day painting and boy does paintin' suck. White on white is especially tricky though apparently there's this nifty blue tint that Ace Hardware makes that you add to the paint and then after 24 hours disappears to leave a pure white paint job. Wish we would have known, of course teaches us that planning before painting is a very smart thing. But before we walked into the hardware store to buy whatever paint we came across, we thought we might try out a product we had heard about a lil' while ago, Boomerang Recycled Paint. Made from mixing unused old domestic paint and for a measly $14.99 a can, how could we go wrong! So we stopped in our local Salvation Army and purchase two cans and now that we've done the dead are quite happy with the colour we chose. We won't spoil it, you'll have to come see yourself. Tomorrow, more painting(ugh!) and some cleaning(double ugh!) But when the job's all done, we will be two very happy folk.

Move On Up!

Sooo, we're moving! Yes'm. As of June 1 our new retail space will be located at 269 Queen St. East. And oh-boy are we excited! In the meantime we have loads of things to get done. UpsideDive at The Clothing Show, round 2!

Once again UpsideDive will be at The Clothing Show in booth #652. The show runs Friday, May 1 - Sunday, May 3, more details on location and hours here.

The UpsideDive showroom will be closed from Thursday, April 30 - Monday, May 4, in prep and tear down for the show. Of course we'll still be checking emails/phone messages and will respond to your questions and inquiries in a flash.

Also we have two tickets to give away to the show, which we'll give to the first person to stop by the showroom before Thursday, April 30, and tell us our booth number.

We've got loads and loads of new spring attire coming with us to the show, so please do come by and say hello.

Bang for your Buck!

So. During my regular peeking about etsy, I came across this vintage seller, Reruns, who has incredibly reasonable prices on some great pieces(I posted a dress of her's in the last post.) Now mind you some are a tad bland, some are cute/basic and some are just waiting to be altered into something awe-mazing. I loved this gathered bust dress from Balenciaga's S2009 collection, a piece contructed so differently and yet can be so wearable. This is what makes me dream in fashion. Now Reruns has a dress that has a tinge of similarity at a minute fraction of the cost, 10 bucks to be exact. Yes, it's actually a black dress and not a typical spring pastel/bright. But on a night out you can never go wrong with a LilBD. So stop your tsk-ing and take a look-see. First crop it into a mini, if needed slim out the back and tighten the neckline. For $10 what have you got to lose?

Ultimately the dress is not supposed to look exactly or even close to the Balenciaga one, otherwise they wouldn't be special on their own terms.

Some other note worthy pieces from Reruns' selections, the Suede Lace Ups, Hot Leather Skirt, '50s/'60s Gorgeous Dress, '80s sequin Dress, and the Black Pant Jumper which would be slick cut into shorts.

The buzz word is that things are warming up to spring and we can't get these 5 things shake outta our heads.

1) Sewing Classes.

That's right kids, if this is a year to learn a skill it's sewing machine 101. Think of all the things you could do if you only knew how to sew! Alterations, upholstery, birthday gifts! Making your own clothes, that fit you to a T. Art projects, accessories, mending! Honestly my mind goes wild! The workroom run the lovely Karyn, is a great lil' sewing shop here in Toronto. Both Ang and I have taken a one day course and we're both pretty hooked. The great thing is that Karyn offers a wide variety of classes, check the schedule often because they do switch up.

I also recently picked up an amazing book from 1972 called "Designing in Stitching and Applique" by Nancy Belfer.

Quite amazing the work her and her contemporaries produced and in many forms. Wall hangings, textiles, and conceptual pieces all with a mid century abstract art theme but in very organic '70s materials and colour choices.

So in looking around I few found some artists/designers/crafters where sewing is an integral part to their work. APPLIQUE designed by jane makes these awesome brooches in floral and starburst patterns. I came across this one armchair on Fiber Art Furniture and thought it mimicked a lot of the new colours in interiors today. I think i've posted about Snaggs before, but her love for '60s-'70s pop culture, especially Peter Max illustrations keeps me coming back. Also just a quick mention of the awesome Mr. Grant Heaps who makes amazing works comprised of quilting, who this last month was a part of the Radiant Dark show at Made. Not a quilt, but just as time-consuming, his piece can be seen here and here. Quite a magnificent piece, that nods to traditional style craft, pushing it into a modern market.

2) Spring frocks.

Form fitting, architectual and in bold, bright colours. And I know, I know it's hard, but can we forget being too body concious and just have a lil' fun.

This piece on Lushpad says it all. Wood & metal & lux finishes. Now mind you not for every piece of furniture, and not the central focus, but definitely one quiet piece off to the right of the room that catches your eye and smoothes things out quite nicely.

4) Independent Media.

What better a time to read our independent media outlets. Leave Vogue and Esquire to the doctor's office. Zines, blogs, small press mags need all the support they can get. Otherwise if you blink you might miss' em. Worn Fashion Journal and N.E.E.T Magazine are two top picks for those into smashin' fashion. And of course Broken Pencil is a great source for independent press.

5) Vegan French Toast.

Pulp Kitchen makes this to-die-for almond paste french toast, and once again I can't stop thinking about it. Currently I'm searching for a similar recipe, do you happen to have any?

We are always amazed at the genuine connections we make through our shop, it makes it seem a lot more than just work. This is what we've been searching for, i think, a job that we can truly be proud of, and not just 'cause it's going well, but mostly that we've made that deeper connection with our customers. Customers we like to call friends.

So I'd like to shift attention to John & Juli who've recently started a new blog, that is pretty darn amazing, Kitka Design Toronto. J&J live in a very stylish home that they've crafted together, which this week Eye Weekly has featured. I truly think these kids are heading somehwere, their determination to provide a creative connection for design hounds of all kinds is heartfelt. They've made a step, so you should too. WOW! This past month has been quite a busy one! We apologize for our spastic behaviour, there has been a lot of changes at UpsideDive. First off, Missus Natasha, one of the gang, has ventured east to enjoy the treasures of Newfoundland, she'll be updating us with blog posts from the salty coast. On the decor front, we've recently come into a whole store's great '50s-'60s-'70s stock, so our showroom is PACKED! December's a-creeping up and we have bunches and bunches of great vintage Christmas items and great gift ideas that will be posted within the week. We'd also like to introduce our lovely new model Dinah Mannekin, who will be showcasing our latest attire finds. Don't worry once we get a lil' more time, our friends will be back in here helping to model clothes. Upside of Fashion...To Fur or Not To Fur

This is the question I ask myself every time I'm bitten with the vintage fur love bug. I'm a vegan with an unethical fetish. I think it all started when I was a wee lil' grasshopper. An image stays in my mind of a photo of my mother in her late teens wearing a beautiful red fox hat and coat (it was more so the hat that did it for me). It instantly made me think glamor. Old hollywood classics must have helped to kindle that fire, as well. Monroe, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Lauren all looked divine in fur. I talked about my idolization of old hollywood glamor and zest for costume rings in an earlier post, well my fondness to vintage fur goes hand in hand. Anywho, the red fox hat hid out in the back of her closet never to be worn. As I got older it made me sad to think this beautiful creature sacrificed so so much for our own greedy satisfaction and IT JUST SITS THERE NEXT TO A BOX OF OLD CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS?!! I say nuh-uh sister friend, this fatality needs to be saved! Not only for it's beauty but more importantly for what this hat communicates; heartache, love, memories, history, it's an obituary to this dear red fox! We (I) need to give thanks and honor this celestial being for the knowledge it conveys. I feel maybe in some eyes I'm not a true "vegan" but it's all about customizing your beliefs and taking responsibility for what has been destroyed/created (or is it the other way around?) I feel it would be more wasteful to throw vintage fur into a dumpster/landfill. To drag it through the mud or bury it in the sand would be reckless, disrespectful and would we ever learn from our mistakes? I don't want to pretend it never happened, I want it to haunt me so I can comprehend then learn then pass it on to future generations (cause I know this hat is outliving me) so just maybe one day the present fur industries will stop and take liability for the violence they produce. And if you totally don't agree and think owning any fur including vintage is down right outrageous I found some wicked sites that offer fashionable faux fur. Please don't hate the hat cause it's beautiful.

Upside of Sustainability...so many materials.

I, of course, failed at art school. There's still something inside of me that wishes I had tried harder. Maybe if I held out I would have learned a craft or skill. The Mike of today has a hard time picturing himself as an artist. I try my best to not be so wasteful, and instead resourceful, but if I ever broke the artist block, what medium would I be comfortable engaging in? Of course I have an ever present fear that my work would be too salvaged and messy in a bad way. So I don't. Make art that is, or at least until I stop being a freak about it. In the meantime there are artists/crafters/designers/architects that are making really good environmentally conscious work, no damn good work in fact. Some artists see waste goods(second hand/salvage/garbage) as a potential resource. Some use organic/natural materials in their work. All produce a kind of beauty you would have never guessed.

We talked a lil' about Stuart Haygarth who creates amazing and beautiful large installations(possible lighting? mobiles?) out of collected garbage/discarded items. On the Canadian front, the National Post highlighted some 40 designers in their paper this weekend past. Two who caught my eye were the Brothers Dressler, who make gorgeous furniture out of re-purposed/salvaged woods and loyal loot collective's Doha Chebib, who has a line of log bowls made from locally reclaimed trees with an amazing colour palette of painted inner glazes. Most noted is each member of loyal loot's passion for good design - "...a common dedication to create objects which posses an inherent value that will endure and remain loved."

If you take a peek through Etsy, you'll find bunches and bunches of retailers selling innovative re-used materials. A blogger pal of ours Second Life Designs, makes some really amazing jewellery from second hand finds. I really like the way she re-invents each piece, giving it a change of character. Another Etsy shop, Second Line Frames makes picture frames from salvaged siding from homes destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. On first glance I thought of the pieces as art themselves. I'd be interested to see work comprised of salvage materials, especially from buildings/man-made structures, a bit like industrial quilting or architectural Op Art.

On that note, I'd like to mention the architecture duo Single Speed Design. Comprised of couple John Hong and Jinhee Park, who answered a call from Paul Pendini a structural engineer and a salvage collector of sorts. Pendini was working on Boston's Big Dig and wanted them to build him a house made out of short job materials used for the constructing of the underground artery that he saw going to waste. If anything they produced a gorgeous home, that looked anything but garbage. They went on to win over critics with the Big Dig Building, proposing once again the use of salvaged materials.

Of course there is the ever popular ReadyMade magazine, a manual of sorts for turning waste into wonderful, and MAKE mag a techie version. Funny thing, this past weekend I picked up a coupla copies of an old Canadian interior design mag called Canadian HOMES which often had an article about reusing/re-purposing materials into great modern home accessories. If anything it's kinda comforting that one off articles have spun off into full mags, with a wonderfully creative market to fund it.

Lastly, something that really amazed me. Moss graffiti. Okay so maybe it's not a hot topic, but it sure feels like evolution. An amazing art form like street art, evolving into an untouchable form of expression. Vandalism no more, hello organic art. This kinda thing gets me all tingly. The possibilities are endless.

So where do we start? Personally, when it comes to waste material I get a feeling that it's more about minimizing first and re-purposing salvaged goods bound for disposal, instead of reworking items that could potentially have a second use as they are, just maybe with a different person. But I'm sure fresh materials are currently on their way to the dump, broken this and smashed that, waiting for the thinking caps to dream up something beautiful. So keep an eye on your streets, and you're bound to find something inspirational.

First off, thank you for your kind words and flattery. I feel rather well and foxy to boot!... I feel for you HGB as this is a common question we singles often ask ourselves. You meet someone, you like them, it's only natural to want to spend time with those you like. Common sense right? Then why are we so afraid of communicating this desire, why do we fear the stigma of being clingy, or controlling, or heaven forbid looking like we are obsessed!! There is a huge line between obsession and admiration. So large that most competent people know when they are standing between the lines (even when they don't wish to admit it). If you are honest with yourself you will know when you have crossed, or are contemplating crossing, the line. Boy! Those are never fun times from the receiving or giving end!!

For you, my sane friend, I can only offer truth. No mind games, no hokey elaborate schemes, no sitting on rooftops to ambush or spy on your object of desire. How about the plain simple truth- honesty. If you're comfortable, tell him you'd like to see him more, you'd like to hang out, you'd like to spend some time in his company, you enjoy his presence.

If that's not your style, my first question is -do you have confidence in yourself? If the answer is no, then all best laid plans may end up at the same lonely road. Eventually, the more time you spend with someone, the closer they'll get to seeing your insecurities. I see this phobia with a lot of young people today -the fear of intimacy. Don't be afraid of being vulnerable. Identify your insecurities -accept them, allow others to accept them, conquer them when you're ready. And don't hold others responsible if they choose not to accept your vulnerabilities.

If you're not sure that he wants to spend time with you and you'd rather not pick his brain about it, then make the choice easy and worry-free for him. Invite him to an upcoming party or gathering, for a no-pressure evening with friends. Or purchase a pair of tickets for a movie, a play or other event you have been wanting to see. Let him know that you have an extra ticket and you'd like him to join you. If he likes you, he'll be interested in attending even if the specific play or movie doesn't interest him. If he can't make it but seems genuine then make plans for another date or time. If he's not interested, then use those tickets to take a friend and consider yourself lucky- at least he's not leading you on.

If you're confident that he's receptive to spending time with you, why not introduce projects that require some commitment and participation -like enrolling in lessons or taking classes in subjects you both find interesting. It could be as simple and cheap as free cooking classes at say, the local Loblaw's, or a monthly book or music club, maybe weekly coffee chat (I happen to know that the coffee at Dark Horse is date worthy).

He'll want to be around people who bring out the best in him. Let him know you value and appreciate his opinion by asking for his input. i.e. what type of beer does he recommend stocking your upcoming party with? what kind of couch would look good with your new paint colours-a/b/c? you're buying a new car or bike: would he test drive some models with you? ask him what do guys think about so and so? And when he does share, don't criticize. Thank him for his input even if you decide not to do anything with it.

But let's face it, we can't force someone to spend time with us (if we're sane that is), no matter how much we think they'll like us if only they give us the chance. Some people are not willing to take the chance. If you try reaching out and you get a cold shoulder, well then, it's time to re-direct your attention. And you shouldn't feel embarrassed for knowing what you want and sharing that with someone you really like. This doesn't make you clingy, a control-freak, or a stalker. Ditch any fear mongering stigma that you may have, be confident and open to being vulnerable. It is only in asking that we can receive. Good luck to you.

Dear TT,

That is unfortunate, but first and foremost, I'm not your doctor. You should feel comfortable enough to go to your doctor when medical problems arise or at the very least for Ontario residents give Telehealth a call at 1-866-797-0000, TTY : 1-866-797-0007. But in the meantime let's learn a lil' about Tinea Pedis, most commonly known as Athlete's Foot.

In actuality the term is a disease, the parasitic fungal infection of the skin on the foot, most often between the toes. The fungi can lead to many similar diseases like tinea corporis on the body/limbs and tinea cruris better known as jock itch. The fungi that can cause it, called dermatophytes, happens when there is a concentration of moisture on the skin which then leads to build up of mold, or even yeast. The mold then grows into the skin causing irritation, skin flaking, and even cracking. It is highly contagious disease. Once infected, if quickly addressed there are many over the counter medications that can help treat it. Talk to your doctor or even your local pharmacist, they can tell you which product works best. For treatment and prevention good hygiene is most important. The fungus is commonly received from showers, bathhouses, and sharing of towels and shoes. Make sure after washing to fully dry your feet before you put socks on and wear flip flops/sandals in public showers/bathhouses. Change up your shoes from day to day and make sure not to change out of wet shoes promptly and to dry the shoes completely before wearing again. Best to wear open toe shoes/sandals or light weave/mesh fabric sneakers to alleviate moisture from your feet during long walks or working out. I just adore women who wear big bold rings. Something about them just screams glitz and glam. These rings make me think 1920s jazz or flapper girls. The films and party photos of old hollywood glamour may have something to do with it.

I wanted to learn more about this mesmerizing band worn by the glitteratzi... so this is what I learned. The cocktail ring was popular in the 1940s and '50s, during the US prohibition, illegal cocktail parties were all the rage! Such a ring flaunted not only the fact that

one was drinking illegally, but also that one was doing it with style. Generally women would wear them on their pinky finger of their right hand, thus being referred to as right hand rings. The more precious stones, particularly diamonds, the more you stood out. Now a days, cocktail rings are usually sold in costume jewelry shops and are made out of faux stones. Your best bet to find a precious right hand ring is to ask your grammy or go to an estate sale (I know it's sad to think that you are buying off a dead woman but if not you someone else will, plus she would want you to wear it and pass on her style) I could see a whole room of Jacki-o Skeletons green with envy cause you got to have Aunt Judiths famous amethysts. Etsy stores may sell them all though I checked and did not find any I truly fancy. This fall season you better flaunt it like your drunk off illegal moonshine, not only at the fanciest of cocktail parties but on the street, in the park, and while sleeping.
